Why visit Sarychat-Ertash?
Sarychat-Ertash State Reserve is a protected area in Issyk-Kul Region, located about 100 km south of Karakol in the high-altitude region near the Kyrgyz-Chinese border. Established in 1995, the reserve covers approximately 1,340 km² of pristine mountain wilderness, including the Sarychat and Ertash river valleys at elevations between 2,500 and 5,000 m.
The reserve is one of the most important habitats for the endangered snow leopard in Kyrgyzstan, along with Marco Polo sheep, ibex, and golden eagles. The landscape features vast alpine valleys, glaciers, and dramatic peaks. The climate is severe: short, cool summers with temperatures rarely above 15°C, and long, harsh winters. The area is accessible only in July and August.
