Why visit Balykchy?

Balykchy (Kyrgyz: Балыкчы) is a city of 51,000 people (2021) on the western shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. Formerly known as Ribachie (Рыбачие, "Fisherman" in Russian), it was the centre of the lake's fishing fleet during the Soviet era, but has suffered a major decline since the collapse of the USSR. Today it is the gateway to Issyk-Kul — most travellers pass through on their way to the lake's resorts and attractions.

The city sits at the western end of the lake, where the main road from Bishkek splits into the northern and southern lake routes. The microclimate is notably dry and windy compared to the rest of the lake basin. The climate is continental: warm summers (25-30°C) and cold winters (-5 to -15°C).
