Cholpon-Ata
Ysyk-Köl, Kyrgyzstan
Why visit Cholpon-Ata?
Cholpon-Ata is a summer resort town on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, about 150 km west of Karakol and 220 km east of Bishkek. In summer it is quite crowded, full of wealthy Kazakhs, Russians, and locals enjoying the lake beaches. With the beginning of autumn, the city slows down and many hotels and restaurants close over winter.
The town is known for its petroglyph fields, clean lake beaches, and Soviet-era sanatoriums. The climate is mild by Kyrgyz standards: warm summers (25-30°C) and cool winters (-5 to -10°C). The summer season runs June to September.
