Why visit Chok-Tal?

Chok-Tal (Kyrgyz: Чок-Тал, meaning "Bare Willow") is a small village on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, about 40 km east of Cholpon-Ata and 110 km west of Karakol. The population is about 1,500. It is a quiet agricultural and resort village with lake access, offering a peaceful alternative to the busier resorts.

The climate is mild in summer (25-30°C) with cool lake breezes. The summer season (June-September) brings visitors seeking a quieter alternative to the larger lake resorts. The village is spread along the main northern shore road, with narrow lanes leading down to the lakefront.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Tamchy Airport (IKU IATA) is about 70 km west, with summer flights from Bishkek and regional cities.

By Car / Road

Marshrutkas along the northern shore road between Cholpon-Ata and Karakol stop at Chok-Tal. From Cholpon-Ata about 40 minutes (50–80 som). From Balykchy about 2 hours (150–200 som). Shared taxis from Cholpon-Ata cost 300–500 som.

The village is small and walkable. Marshrutkas passing on the main road provide connections to neighbouring villages.

What are the things to do?

  • Lake Issyk-Kul — Quiet lakefront with a pebble-and-sand beach, less crowded than the larger resorts.

  • Tien Shan mountain views — The snowy peaks of the Kungey Ala-Too range are visible across the lake on clear days.
