Jalal-Abad
Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan
Why visit Jalal-Abad?
Jalal-Abad is the administrative centre of Jalal-Abad Region in western Kyrgyzstan, with a population of about 100,000. It is the third-largest city in the country, located in the Ferghana Valley foothills, about 100 km southwest of Bishkek on the main road to Osh. The city is a convenient transport hub between Bishkek and Osh.
The city sits at the confluence of the Kara-Darya and Kök-Art rivers in a fertile agricultural region known for orchards, tobacco, and cotton. Jalal-Abad has a significant Uzbek minority and a more conservative Islamic character typical of Ferghana Valley cities. The climate is continental: hot summers (30-35°C) and cool winters (-5 to -10°C). Spring and autumn are the best times to visit. The city centre is compact around the central bazaar and the main squares.
