Why visit Mayluu-Suu?

Mayluu-Suu (Kyrgyz: Майлуу-Суу, meaning "Oily Water") is a town in Jalal-Abad Region, about 80 km southwest of Jalal-Abad city in the Ferghana Valley foothills. The population is about 20,000. The town was a significant Soviet-era uranium mining centre, with mines operating from the 1940s until the 1970s.

The legacy of uranium mining has left environmental challenges, including radioactive tailings ponds in the surrounding hills. Mayluu-Suu is known internationally as one of the most radioactive places in Central Asia, though the town itself is safe for transit. The climate is continental: hot summers (30-35°C) and cool winters.
