Why visit Besh-Aral?
Besh-Aral (Kyrgyz: Беш-Арал, meaning "Five Islands") is a state nature reserve in Jalal-Abad Region, located in the Chatkal Valley in the western Tien Shan mountains, near the border with Uzbekistan. Established in 1979, the reserve covers about 1,100 km² of pristine mountain wilderness.
The reserve is known for its population of Menzbier's marmot (an endangered species endemic to the western Tien Shan) and diverse wildlife including snow leopard, ibex, and golden eagle. The landscape features alpine meadows, juniper forests, and glacial valleys. Summer (June-September) is the only practical visiting season.
