Poland

Poland is a small village located near South West Point on Kiritimati (Christmas Island) in the Northern Line Islands of Kiribati. The unusual name dates from the plantation era of Father Emmanuel Rougier (1917–1939), who named it after his Polish plantation manager, Stanisław (Stanislaus) Pełczyński. Poland is one of five main settlements on the atoll, with a population of about 351 (2015 census). The village sits on the southern side of the large central lagoon, accessible via a road that crosses the salt flats from the northern settlements. Poland has a Catholic church dedicated under the patronage of Saint Stanislaus. Kiritimati has a unique equatorial climate with low rainfall (averaging 873 mm annually) and steady temperatures of 24–30°C year-round.

By Plane

Cassidy International Airport (CXI) is about 25 km north of Poland. From the airport, a taxi or private vehicle takes about 30 minutes along the unpaved road that crosses the lagoon flats. Fiji Airways operates weekly flights from Nadi (Fiji).

By Car / Road

An unpaved road connects Poland to Banana, Tabwakea, and London across the lagoon flats. The road is passable in dry conditions but may be difficult after rain. A 4WD is recommended. There are no car rental services — arrange transport through a guesthouse.

Poland is a small village and easily walkable. For travel to other settlements, a private vehicle or taxi from London or Banana must be arranged in advance.

• Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church: A small white church in the village, the spiritual centre of Poland's community, named for the Polish patron saint.

• South West Point: The southwestern tip of Kiritimati, with views over the open Pacific Ocean.

• The lagoon crossing: The road across the dry salt flats of the lagoon offers a dramatic landscape of white salt pans and distant coconut palms.

• Local village life: Poland is quieter and more traditional than the northern settlements, offering a glimpse of remote island living.

• Fishing: The southern lagoon and ocean side offer excellent fishing for bonefish, trevally, and reef species.

• Visit the church: Attend a Sunday service to experience the strong community faith of the village.

• Photography: The salt flats at sunset and the remote southern shoreline are exceptionally photogenic.

• Walking: Explore the extensive southern shoreline and observe seabirds and marine life.

There are no restaurants in Poland. Meals are taken at the guesthouse or with local families. Simple dishes of fresh fish, coconut, and rice predominate. Visitors should bring any special food requirements.

Drinking water is from rainwater tanks. Bottled drinks are very limited. Coconut water is available. Stock up on water and drinks in London before travelling to Poland.

• Budget: The island council or church may be able to arrange a basic room for visitors. Accommodation is very simple with shared facilities, from around 20–40 AUD. Book through the Kiritimati Island Council in advance.
• Mid-range: No mid-range or upscale options exist in Poland.

There are very limited shops in Poland — only basic essentials. All major shopping should be done in London or Tabwakea before heading south. There is no market.

• Banana (about 25 km north) — Near Cassidy International Airport, with guesthouses and access to flights.
• Tabwakea (about 25 km north) — The largest settlement on Kiritimati with shops and services.
• London (about 25 km north) — The historic port village with the main jetty.
• Bay of Wrecks (southeast coast of Kiritimati) — A remote area with shipwreck remains and abundant birdlife.
