Why visit Chiran?

Chiran (知覧) is a small town in southern Kagoshima Prefecture, now administered as part of Minamikyushu City. Nestled among rolling tea plantations and volcanic hills, Chiran is best known for two things: its solemn World War II kamikaze history and its beautifully preserved samurai district.

The town's most poignant story belongs to Tome Torihama, who ran a military eatery during the final years of the war where young kamikaze pilots took their last meals. Her kindness to the doomed airmen became legendary, most famously the story of Sgt. Saburo Miyagawa, who promised to return as a firefly after his final mission — a tale later immortalised in books and the 2001 film Hotaru. This story and the wider history of Chiran's wartime base drew a tourism boom that continues to this day.

Beyond its wartime legacy, Chiran offers a peaceful countryside atmosphere. The climate is mild year-round thanks to its southern Kyushu latitude, with spring (March–April) and autumn (October–November) being the most pleasant seasons for walking the samurai district's stone-walled lanes. Summers are hot and humid; the tea harvest season runs from May through October.

How do you get there?

By Plane

The nearest airport is Kagoshima Airport (KOJ), approximately 40 km north of Chiran. From the airport, take a rental car or taxi (about 50 minutes). Airport limousine buses run to Kagoshima city centre, from where you can continue by train and bus.

By Train

From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, take the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line to Hirakawa (平川) station (about 30 minutes). From there, Kagoshima Kotsu buses run approximately hourly to Chiran (about 30 minutes). The train is covered by the Japan Rail Pass; the bus is not.

By Car / Road

Chiran is about one hour south of Kagoshima city by car via Route 225 or the Minamikyushu Expressway. Roads are well-maintained and scenic, passing through tea-growing countryside. Ample free parking is available at major attractions.

Kagoshima Kotsu also operates a direct bus from the Yamakataya department store in central Kagoshima to Chiran (about 70 minutes).

Chiran is a compact town and most sights are within walking distance of each other. The samurai district, the peace museum, and the Tomiya Shokudou are all accessible on foot within a 15-minute radius.

There is no local public transport within Chiran itself. A rental car is useful for visiting surrounding tea plantations, the Sata Misaki (Cape Sata) area, or making side trips to Ibusuki. Taxis can be hired but are limited; ask your accommodation to arrange one.

Bicycle rental may be available seasonally from the tourist information office.

What are the things to do?

  • Chiran Special Attack Peace Museum (知覧特攻平和会館) — The town's primary attraction. Displays over 1,000 photographs, personal letters, and artefacts belonging to the young kamikaze pilots who flew from the Chiran base in 1945. English audio headsets available. Open daily 9:00–17:00. Adults ¥500, children ¥300. Tel: +81 993-83-2525.

  • Samurai Street (武士家通り) — A lane of seven preserved Edo-period samurai residences set behind stone walls and meticulously maintained gardens. Unlike many overhyped "samurai streets" in rural Japan, Chiran's is genuinely atmospheric, especially in spring when the azaleas bloom. Gardens open 9:00–17:00; admission ~¥500 for a combined ticket.

  • Tomiya Shokudou — The original site of Tome Torihama's wartime eatery, preserved as a small museum. Free to view from outside; interior access varies.

  • Chiran Peace Park — Adjacent to the museum, an outdoor memorial with a preserved runway, attack aircraft, and monuments set in parkland.

  • Walk the samurai district gardens — A leisurely stroll through the stone-walled lanes and garden estates takes 1–2 hours. Spring azaleas and autumn foliage are the peak seasons.

  • Visit Chiran tea plantations — The surrounding hills produce Kagoshima's finest green tea. Farm visits and tastings can be arranged through the tourist office; tea-picking experiences are available in May–June.

  • Explore the kamikaze base remains — The preserved airfield and related sites offer a reflective half-day walk, with informational panels in Japanese (English pamphlets available at the museum).

  • Day trip to Ibusuki — The hot-sand bath resort town is only 30 minutes south by car.
