About Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park

Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park (霧島錦江湾国立公園) spans Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. In Kagoshima Prefecture, the park includes the Kirishima volcanic mountain range on the landward side and the spectacular Kinkowan (Kagoshima Bay) with the active volcano Sakurajima. The park features Japan's most active volcano (Sakurajima), pristine crater lakes, steaming hot springs, and dramatic coastal scenery. The Kirishima area is a sacred region in Japanese mythology, associated with the descent of the gods. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

How to reach

By Plane

Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) is located within the park area, about 30 minutes from Kirishima Onsen by car.

By Train

Kirishima-Jingu Station is on the JR Nippo Main Line. From Kagoshima-Chuo Station, limited express trains take about 1 hour (¥2,000).

By Car / Road

The Kyushu Expressway passes through the park. From Kagoshima about 30 minutes to Kirishima.

A car is essential. The Kirishima Skyline toll road connects the main trailheads and viewpoints.

  • Sakurajima (桜島) — One of Japan's most active volcanoes, accessible by ferry from Kagoshima. Observation points and walking trails.

  • Mount Takachiho-no-mine (高千穂峰) — The sacred peak where Ninigi-no-Mikoto is said to have descended. A classic conical volcano.
