Why visit Ferrazzano?

Ferrazzano is a hill town in the province of Campobasso, Molise, known as the "Sentinel of Molise" for its commanding position overlooking the valley around Campobasso and the Matese and Mainarde mountains. Its Castello Carafa dates originally to the Norman era, around the year 1000, when it was built to control access routes to the Biferno valley and the Molisan capital. After the earthquake of 1456 the fortress was rebuilt, and between 1494 and 1506 Gerolamo Carafa, of the noble Neapolitan Carafa family, oversaw its transformation into a baronial residence, giving it its current appearance. Two circular towers of different sizes survive from the medieval defensive structure, later adapted for the use of firearms. The site has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 1981.
