Frosolone

Molise, Italy

Why visit Frosolone?

Frosolone is a hill town in the province of Isernia, Molise, renowned for a centuries-old tradition of knife and scissor making. The craft's roots are traced by some sources to medieval Lombard-era settlement and to Venetian artisans who migrated south, and by the 15th century the wider County of Molise, with Frosolone and Campobasso at its center, was recognized as a major weapons- and blade-production hub in central-southern Italy. The industry expanded further under Charles of Bourbon's promotion of armaments manufacturing, peaking in the 19th century when it employed hundreds of residents. The philosopher Benedetto Croce praised Frosolone's razors as rivaling those of Toledo and Sheffield. Frosolone remains the only town in southern Italy where traditional knife- and scissor-making is still practiced, and it is home to a Museum of Knives displaying historic pieces from the region's leading manufacturers.
