Mondavio
Marche, Italy
Why visit Mondavio?
Mondavio is a small walled town in the province of Pesaro e Urbino, in the Marche, built around one of the region's best-preserved Renaissance fortresses, the Rocca Roveresca. It was commissioned by Giovanni della Rovere — nephew of Pope Sixtus IV and son-in-law of Duke Federico da Montefeltro of Urbino — and designed by the Sienese military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini, probably in the 1480s, as one of a series of fortresses built across the duchy alongside those at Fossombrone, Sassocorvaro, and Cagli. Its octagonal keep with sloping, trapezoidal outer walls was engineered to deflect cannon fire rather than absorb it head-on. Construction was left incomplete after Martini returned to Siena and both he and della Rovere died in 1501. After the Duchy of Urbino passed to the Papal States in 1631, the fortress served as a prison for roughly three centuries; today its keep houses museum and exhibition spaces, including an armory and a historical-reenactment display of Renaissance life.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
Mondavio has no railway station of its own; the nearest stations are on the Adriatic coastal line at Fano and Marotta-Mondolfo, roughly 30 km away, with Adriabus regional services connecting to the town. By car, it is reached inland from Fano via the Metauro valley road.
The small walled centre is compact and easily explored on foot.
What are the things to do?
The Rocca Roveresca is the town's principal sight: a late-15th-century octagonal fortress by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, now open as a museum with an armory and reenactment displays across several floors of the keep. The small walled historic centre around it preserves its Renaissance-era layout.
