Watampone

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Watampone?

Watampone is the capital of Bone Regency in South Sulawesi, located on the Gulf of Bone about 130 km northeast of Makassar. With a population of around 100,000, it is an important historical centre as the seat of the powerful Bone Sultanate, one of the most influential Buginese kingdoms. The town is known for the La Patau Museum and its well-preserved Bugis cultural heritage.

The Bone Sultanate dominated the politics and trade of South Sulawesi from the 17th to the 19th century, and the town retains a strong sense of Bugis identity. The surrounding region is a productive agricultural area for rice, corn, and cocoa.

The climate is tropical with a dry season June–October.
