Bau-Bau
Sulawesi, Indonesia
Why visit Bau-Bau?
Bau-Bau is the capital of Buton Regency in Southeast Sulawesi, located on the island of Buton. With a population of around 160,000, it is the largest city in Southeast Sulawesi outside of Kendari. The city sits on the shores of Bau-Bau Bay and is dominated by the historic Kota Raja (Royal Fort) — the largest fortress in the world according to the Guinness World Records.
Bau-Bau was the seat of the Sultanate of Buton, a powerful Islamic kingdom that controlled trade routes through the region for centuries. The sultanate's legacy is preserved in the massive stone fortifications of Kota Raja, which stretch over 22 km around the city. The city is also a centre of the Wolio culture, with its own language and traditions.
The climate is tropical with a marked dry season June–October.
