Bangka

Bangka is a small island off the northern tip of Sulawesi, in Likupang Timur district, North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi province. It is reached by boat from the port of Likupang on the mainland. About 2,400 people (2010) live in its four coastal villages, Lihunu, Kahuku, Libas and Ehe, mostly from fishing and coconut growing. The island is known for undeveloped beaches and diving on the surrounding coral reefs.

The island drew national attention when a local government issued a mining exploration permit to a Chinese company that planned to mine iron ore there.

The climate is tropical, with a drier season from about June to October and a wetter season from November to April.

By Plane

Sam Ratulangi International Airport (MDC) in Manado is the nearest airport. From Manado, travel by road to Likupang and continue by boat to Bangka.

By Car / Road

From Manado, drive north to Likupang. From Likupang harbour, local boats cross to Bangka Island.

Walking is the main option on the island. Boats can be chartered for trips to nearby islands.

• Beaches: undeveloped white-sand beaches around the island.

• Coral reefs: reefs with turtles and tropical fish visible from the surface.

• Snorkelling: coral reefs with turtles and tropical fish reachable from the beach.

• Diving: several dive sites around the island.

• Island walks: walk between the villages on the small island.

Resorts and homestays provide meals; fresh seafood is the main offering.

Stock up on bottled water before arriving on the island.
