About Bulukumba

Bulukumba is the capital of Bulukumba Regency in South Sulawesi, located about 150 km southeast of Makassar on the southern peninsula. The regency is famous for Tana Beru — the traditional boat-building village where Buginese craftsmen construct Phinisi schooners using methods handed down through generations. These elegant wooden sailing ships are the backbone of the inter-island cargo trade across Indonesia.

The town itself is an agricultural and trading centre surrounded by rice paddies, cocoa plantations, and fruit orchards. The coast is lined with beaches and traditional fishing villages. Bulukumba is the starting point for exploring the southern coast of South Sulawesi, including Bira and the Phinisi shipyards.

The climate is tropical with a dry season June–October and a wet season November–April.
