Gorontalo

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Gorontalo?

Gorontalo is the capital of Gorontalo Province in northern Sulawesi, located on the Minahasa Peninsula along the coast of Tomini Bay. With a population of around 200,000, it is the economic and cultural centre of the province. The city was historically part of North Sulawesi but became its own province in 2000, including the distinct Gorontaloan identity and language.

The city is known for its strong Islamic culture, beautiful bay setting, and as a gateway to the Togean Islands. The Gorontaloan people have a rich tradition of seafaring and fishing. Lake Limboto, once a vast lake near the city, has shrunk dramatically due to sedimentation but remains an important wetland.

The climate is tropical with a dry season June–October. Temperatures range from 24–33°C.
