Bitung

Sulawesi, Indonesia

Why visit Bitung?

Bitung is a city on the northeastern tip of North Sulawesi, about 50 km east of Manado. With a population of around 200,000, it is an important fishing port and the home of the famous Lembeh Strait — one of the world's premier muck diving destinations. The city is also a major fish processing centre and has a deep-water container port serving eastern Indonesia.

Lembeh Strait, the narrow channel between the mainland and Lembeh Island, is renowned for its extraordinary concentration of bizarre and rare marine life — frogfish, pygmy seahorses, blue-ringed octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, mimic octopus, and countless species of nudibranchs. The black volcanic sand bottoms, muck, and artificial reefs create a unique habitat that attracts macro photography enthusiasts from around the world.

The climate is tropical with year-round temperatures of 25–33°C. Diving is possible year-round, with the dry season (June–October) offering the calmest seas.
