Blitar is a city in East Java known primarily as the birthplace and burial place of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. It is a quiet agricultural town surrounded by fertile plains in the shadow of Mount Kelud, one of Java's most active volcanoes. How do you get there?

By train

Blitar Station serves trains from Surabaya (2 hours), Malang (1.5 hours), Yogyakarta (4 hours), and Jakarta.

By bus

Buses connect Blitar to Malang, Surabaya, Tulungagung, and other East Java cities.

By car

Blitar is about 2 hours south of Surabaya and 1.5 hours south of Malang.

Angkot (minivans), becak, and ride-hailing apps (Gojek, Grab) are available.

What are the things to do?

Makam Bung Karno (Sukarno's Mausoleum), the elaborate burial complex of President Sukarno. Pustaka Building, the former residence of Sukarno's father. Istana Gebang, Sukarno's childhood home-turned-museum. The Kelud volcano (active, check conditions before visiting). Simpang Lima Gumul monument — Blitar's own Arc de Triomphe-style structure.

Tour the Sukarno heritage sites. Visit Mount Kelud (beautiful crater lake, check if open). Explore the surrounding rice paddies and villages.
