Tarkwa
Western, Ghana
Why visit Tarkwa?
Tarkwa is a mining town in Ghana's Western Region, roughly 300 km west of Accra, at the heart of the country's gold-mining belt. Gold Fields Ghana operates a large open-pit mine here (90% Gold Fields, 10% government-owned), one of the biggest gold-mining operations in Africa, and the town's economy and character are shaped by mining. Tarkwa is also home to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Ghana's dedicated tertiary institution for mining and mineral engineering, which works closely with the local mining industry.
