Belep

The Belep Islands (Îles Bélep) are a commune and archipelago at the northern tip of New Caledonia's main island, Grande Terre. They consist of two main islands, Art and Pott, along with smaller islets. The islands are known for their pristine natural environment, traditional Kanak culture, and remote beauty.

Access is by small plane from Nouméa to the Île Art airstrip (Air Calédonie), or by boat from Koumac or Poum on Grande Terre. The boat journey takes several hours and is weather-dependent. Travel should be arranged in advance.

The islands are small and best explored on foot or by bicycle. There are no paved roads or public transport. Local guides can arrange transport by truck or boat.

Meals are typically arranged through lodges or with local families. Fresh fish, coconut, and root vegetables feature in traditional Kanak cuisine.

Coconut water is abundant. Bring bottled water as supplies may be limited. Local coffee is available at lodges.

Accommodation is limited to tribal lodges (cases) and a few basic guesthouses. Booking is essential. Camping is possible in some areas.

Local handicrafts can be purchased from village cooperatives. There are no major shops — bring all essentials.
