Hamelmalo
Ansabā, Eritrea
Why visit Hamelmalo?
Hamelmalo is a small town in the Ansaba region of Eritrea, situated in the dry highland zone roughly halfway between Keren and Agordat. It functions as a local administrative centre and periodic market for the surrounding farming and herding communities. The population is predominantly Tigre, with livelihoods centred on livestock, sorghum and millet cultivation, and small-scale trade.
The area features the characteristic rugged granite hills and open scrubland of the central Eritrean highlands. Hamelmalo experiences a semi-arid climate: hot year-round with a distinct rainy season from July to September. The dry season from October to February is the most comfortable period for travel, with cooler temperatures and clear skies.
