Why visit Asmat?
Asmat is a small community in the Ansaba region of Eritrea, located in the dry highlands west of Keren. It is a minor rural settlement whose economy is based on livestock herding and subsistence agriculture. The population forms part of the broader Tigre-speaking community of the Ansaba interior.
The surrounding landscape consists of rocky hills covered in sparse acacia and dry grassland, characteristic of the semi-arid Eritrean highlands. The rainy season from July to September brings brief but intense rainfall. The most comfortable travel season is October through February.

By Plane
Asmara International Airport (ASM), approximately 130 km south-east, is the nearest major airport.
By Car / Road
Asmat is reachable by unpaved roads linking the settlements of the Ansaba highlands. From Keren the journey takes about 1–2 hours by 4WD, depending on road conditions. Shared transport from Keren is limited.
The settlement is small and walkable. For travel to outlying areas, local trucks provide informal transport.
