Why visit Hagaz?

Hagaz is a small agricultural town in the Ansaba region of Eritrea, located in the dry highlands west of Keren. It serves as a minor administrative centre and market town for the surrounding farming communities. The local economy is based on livestock grazing and the cultivation of sorghum, millet, and vegetables in seasonal river valleys. The population is predominantly Tigre.

The terrain around Hagaz consists of rolling rocky hills covered in acacia bushland, with panoramic views across the Ansaba interior. The climate is semi-arid, with a single rainy season from July to September. The best time to visit is during the dry and cooler months from October to February.

How do you get there?

By Plane

Asmara International Airport (ASM), about 130 km south-east, is the nearest airport. Domestic flights are not available to Hagaz.

By Car / Road

Hagaz is accessible via unpaved roads branching from the Keren–Agordat route. From Keren the drive takes roughly 1–1.5 hours by 4WD. Minibus service from Keren is irregular. A private hire vehicle from Keren is recommended.

The town can be covered on foot. For longer trips, local pickup trucks serve as shared transport.
