Halhal

Ansabā, Eritrea

Why visit Halhal?

Halhal is a small market town in the Ansaba region of central-western Eritrea, lying in the dry highlands west of Keren. It serves as an administrative and trading centre for the surrounding rural villages, where agriculture and livestock herding form the backbone of the local economy. The area is inhabited predominantly by Tigre-speaking communities, with smaller Bilen populations. The landscape is characterised by rugged granite inselbergs and semi-arid scrubland, typical of the Eritrean highland fringe.

The climate is hot and dry for much of the year. The main rainy season runs from July to September, with modest precipitation that supports sorghum, millet, and livestock grazing. The best time to visit is between October and February, when temperatures are cooler and the landscape is greenest after the rains.
