Zagazig

Ash Sharqīyah, Egypt

Why visit Zagazig?

Zagazig is the capital of Sharqia Governorate, in the eastern Nile Delta on the Muweis Canal, and a hub of the corn and cotton trade. The modern city was founded in the 19th century on the site of a village called Nazlat az-Zaqāzīq, named after the Zaqzuq family. It is home to Zagazig University, founded in 1974 and one of Egypt's largest, and was the birthplace of the 19th-century Egyptian nationalist leader Ahmed Orabi. Just outside the city lies Bubastis (Tell Basta), one of ancient Egypt's most important cities from the late 4th millennium BCE through the Roman era, known as Pr-Bastet ("House of Bastet") and the capital of Egypt during the 22nd and 23rd Dynasties; Zagazig University's Archaeological Museum holds significant finds from Bubastis and the nearby site of Kufur Nigm.
