Diyarb Negm is one of the oldest settlements in Sharqia Governorate and the seat of its own markaz (administrative district), about 23 km from Zagazig University. Its name means "the home of Najm al-Din Ayyub," after the Ayyubid commander who is said to have camped there with his soldiers during the Crusades, with the local population supporting him. It has a population of roughly 81,000.

Diyarb Negm is linked to Zagazig and on to Cairo by frequent public bus and microbus services; the trip to Cairo takes roughly 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic. The nearest passenger train station is in Zagazig, about 19 km away.
