Minya El Qamh

Ash Sharqīyah, Egypt

Why visit Minya El Qamh?

Minya al-Qamh ("abode of the wheat") is the capital of its own markaz in Sharqia Governorate, lying on a branch of the Nile called the Muweis between Zagazig (the governorate capital) and Banha. Originally a village with wheat storage silos, it took its current name in 1813 under Muhammad Ali's provincial reforms. The Al-Aziziya district's administrative council moved there in 1854, it was named capital of its own markaz in 1871, and government offices were established in 1875 owing to its central location and position on the railway line; a municipal council was founded in 1905. Its markaz was Sharqia's third-largest by population in 2017, with about 769,000 residents across the markaz and roughly 88,000 in the town itself. The Muweis Nile branch splits the town into northern and southern halves and is part of a historic waterway linking Cairo, Alexandria, and Zagazig.
