Faqous

Ash Sharqīyah, Egypt

Why visit Faqous?

Faqous (Faqus) is a city in Sharqia Governorate identified with the ancient city of Phacusa, capital of the Arabian nome of Lower Egypt. Its ancient Egyptian name was Per-Sopdu ("Domain of Sopdu"), later Kes; the pharaoh Nectanebo I (r. 380–362 BCE) built a granite shrine to the god Sopdu there, and the town grew as a hub for agriculture and trade on routes linking Egypt to Sinai and the Levant. Medieval Arab geographers including Ibn Khordadbeh, al-Maqrizi, al-Istakhri, and al-Muqaddasi mention it. The wider area is known for nearby ancient sites including Tell el-Dab'a and Qantir. Today Faqous is a Delta agricultural market town; little of its ancient past survives above ground on site.
