New Cairo
Al Qāhirah, Egypt
Why visit New Cairo?
New Cairo is a large planned district east of Cairo, developed as part of Egypt's program to relieve congestion in the historic capital. It consists mainly of gated residential compounds, shopping malls, and educational institutions. Its best-known landmark is the American University in Cairo's New Cairo campus: AUC bought 260 acres of land here in 1997 for a $400-million campus that opened in Fall 2008, relocating from its century-old downtown Cairo home (AUC itself was founded in 1919). Large mixed-use developments such as Madinaty also anchor the area.
