Ras Ghareb

Al Baḩr al Aḩmar, Egypt

Why visit Ras Ghareb?

Ras Ghareb is an industrial town on the Gulf of Suez coast of the Red Sea Governorate, roughly 260 km southeast of Cairo. Unlike the dive-resort towns further south, its identity is built on energy: it grew as Egypt's main oil-industry town after oil was discovered nearby in the late 1930s (first developed by Anglo-Egyptian Oilfields, a Shell affiliate, later by the nationalized Egyptian petroleum sector), and it now also anchors the Gulf of Suez wind corridor, one of the strongest in the Middle East — the nearby Ras Ghareb wind farm complex includes the 650 MW Red Sea Wind Energy project, among the largest wind farms in the Middle East and Africa.
