El Quseir

Al Baḩr al Aḩmar, Egypt

Why visit El Quseir?

El Quseir is a historic Red Sea port town, roughly a three-hour drive east of Luxor at one of the narrowest points between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea. Known in antiquity as Leucus Limen ("White Port"), it served as a gateway for Pharaonic expeditions to the Land of Punt and later as a Roman commercial harbor; its Arabic name, meaning roughly "the short one," reflects its role as the shortest overland route for pilgrims traveling from the Nile to Mecca. The Ottomans built its fortress in 1571 on the recommendation of Sinan Pasha to protect the town and pilgrim traffic; the fort was later occupied by Napoleon's forces in the 1790s, used by Muhammad Ali Pasha in campaigns against Arabia from 1816, and remained an Egyptian coast-guard base until 1975. El Quseir's old town retains narrow streets, coral-stone buildings, and carved wooden doors and windows from this layered history.
