Safaga

Al Baḩr al Aḩmar, Egypt

Why visit Safaga?

Safaga is a Red Sea port and resort town about 65 km south of Hurghada, with a distinctive dual identity: it is one of Egypt's key commercial ports, exporting phosphate ore since 1911 and serving as a ferry gateway for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims and other travelers crossing to Duba, Yanbu, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. It is also known for its black sand beaches, whose high mineral (including low-level radioactive) content has long been promoted for therapeutic treatment of psoriasis and joint conditions, and for strong, reliable winds that made it a windsurfing destination — it hosted the Red Sea World Windsurfing Championships in 1993.
