Shabunda

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Shabunda?

Shabunda is the administrative center of Shabunda Territory, the largest territory in Sud-Kivu province at over 25,000 square kilometres, set deep in equatorial forest on the Ulindi River. Historically the area was known for palm oil and small-scale gold production. Decades of instability in eastern DRC have left the territory among the most isolated in the country — for long stretches it has been reachable only by air or on foot, with road links to Bukavu periodically cut by poor conditions or insecurity. The local economy today centers on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale trade. The climate is tropical with a rainy season and a dry season.
