Bukavu

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Bukavu?

Bukavu is the capital of Sud-Kivu province, situated on a peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Kivu. Founded in 1901 by the Belgian colonial government, the city retains a notable amount of colonial-era architecture along tree-lined avenues, including the historic Collège Alfajiri, a Belgian-built school that has operated for decades. It lies across the Ruzizi River from Cyangugu, Rwanda. Bukavu is generally considered calmer than Goma and has a more relaxed atmosphere. It is the main gateway to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a short drive west, home to the endangered eastern lowland gorilla — the largest gorilla subspecies, and one of the region's signature wildlife draws.
