Kabare

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Kabare?

Kabare is a town and territory on the western shore of Lake Kivu in Sud-Kivu province, formally established under Belgian colonial rule in 1923. It is the traditional seat of the Mwami of Kabare, the hereditary monarch historically recognized as sovereign ruler of the wider Bushi region and its Shi (Bashi) people; the royal court remains a point of cultural interest for the territory. Kabare Territory borders Bukavu and includes access toward Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Its population, estimated at over 500,000 as of a 2008 count, works largely in agriculture, fishing on Lake Kivu, and small-scale trade.
