Fizi

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Fizi?

Fizi is a town and the administrative center of Fizi Territory in southern Sud-Kivu province, in the highlands stretching toward Lake Tanganyika (not Lake Kivu, despite the province's name) in eastern DRC. The territory is the historic homeland of the Bembe people (Babembe), whose oral tradition traces their origins to a common ancestor who migrated from the northeast through the Itombwe Mountains toward Lake Tanganyika. Administratively, the area was designated "Kalembelembe Territory" (meaning "Abundant Peace") in 1926 before being renamed Fizi Territory in 1935; it was later subdivided into sectors including Itombwe, Lulenge, Mutambala, Ngandja, and Tanganyika. The territory also includes the city of Baraka on the lakeshore. Fizi's economy runs on agriculture, fishing on Lake Tanganyika, and small-scale trade.
