Walungu

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Walungu?

Walungu is the chief town of Walungu Territory, roughly 40 km south of Bukavu in the highlands between Kabare, Mwenga, Uvira, and Shabunda territories. The territory (about 1,800 km²) is split into the Ngweshe and Kaziba chiefdoms and is one of Sud-Kivu's more densely populated agricultural areas, with elevations ranging from around 1,000 m near Kamanyola to over 3,000 m in the surrounding highlands. The economy rests on subsistence and commercial farming and livestock; artisanal mining also takes place in parts of the territory and has at times been linked to security tensions involving armed groups. The climate has a dry season roughly May to September and a rainy season the rest of the year.
