Uvira

Sud-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Why visit Uvira?

Uvira sits at the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika, on the Ruzizi River near the border with Burundi — Bujumbura is under 30 km away. It grew from a Congo Free State-era garrison post into a regional trade hub, and gained official city status by presidential decree in 2018, the second town in Sud-Kivu (after Bukavu) to be so recognized. The economy centers on cross-border trade, fishing, agriculture, and livestock, with the port of Kalundu linking Uvira by boat to Kalemie, Kigoma (Tanzania), Mpulungu (Zambia), and Bujumbura. The nearby Kavimvira–Gatumba crossing is a major informal and formal trade artery with Burundi. The climate is tropical with a rainy and a dry season.
