Mwenga

Mwenga is a town and territory in the highlands of Sud-Kivu province, part of eastern DRC's mineral-rich corridor and home to the gold-mining city of Kamituga. Gold in the region was first discovered in local rivers in the 1920s, and mining — both artisanal and, increasingly since 2011, semi-industrial — has long shaped the territory's economy and, at times, its security problems; a ministerial decree in May 2026 suspended mining activity across gold- and coltan-rich zones in Mwenga and neighboring Shabunda territory. The territory also encompasses part of the Itombwe Plateau, a highland massif significant for its biodiversity and forest cover. Agriculture remains the base livelihood for most residents outside the mining sector.

Road connections link Mwenga to other towns in the province, though roads are largely unpaved.
