Kamituga

Kamituga is a gold-mining city in Mwenga Territory, Sud-Kivu province, in the highlands of eastern DRC. Gold was first discovered in local rivers in the 1920s, with commercial exploitation beginning in the 1930s under the Belgian company Minière des Grands Lacs Africains; large-scale industrial mining continued under successor company SOMINKI through the late 20th century, employing thousands and building much of the town's infrastructure. Industrial production largely collapsed during the two Congo wars of the 1990s–2000s, and artisanal mining expanded rapidly to fill the gap, drawing waves of migrants and more than doubling the town's population. Kamituga was granted formal city status in 2013, comprising the municipalities of Bitanga and Mobale. Today the local economy remains almost entirely dependent on artisanal gold mining.

By Car / Road

Kamituga is reached by road from Bukavu and other Sud-Kivu towns, though roads are largely unpaved and travel can be affected by mining-related traffic.

The town itself functions as a working gold-mining city — artisanal mining sites and the legacy infrastructure of the former industrial SOMINKI operation are what define Kamituga, rather than conventional sightseeing.
