Loukolela
Cuvette, Congo
Why visit Loukolela?
Loukolela is a remote fishing village on the Congo River in northern Cuvette department. The village is accessible only by pirogue and is one of the most isolated settlements in the department. The population lives entirely by fishing and small-scale river trade. Traditional stilted houses line the riverbank, and dugout canoes are the only means of transport.
The climate is tropical with high rainfall from October to May and a drier season from June to September. The Congo River level fluctuates dramatically, affecting access and fishing.
