Ntokou

Ntokou is a remote community in north-western Cuvette department, situated in the Likouala-Mossaka area near the Likouala-aux-Herbes river system. The settlement is extremely isolated, surrounded by vast expanses of swamp forest and primary rainforest. The population lives by fishing, hunting, and gathering forest products.

The climate is equatorial, with heavy rainfall for most of the year. The drier season (June–September) offers the best window for access. Ntokou is an expedition-level destination suitable only for experienced wilderness travellers.

No railway access.

By Boat

Ntokou is accessible by motorised pirogue from Mossaka via the Likouala-aux-Herbes river system. The journey from Mossaka takes several hours to a full day depending on conditions.

By Car / Road

A rough 4WD track from Makoua or Owando reaches the general area, but the final approach is usually by river.

• Pirogue exploration — The main activity is exploring the river and swamp forest by pirogue.

• Birdwatching — The Likouala-aux-Herbes system is excellent for waterbirds and forest species.

• Guided forest walk — With a local guide, walk on elevated ground to experience the forest interior.
