Zhaotong
Yunnan Sheng, China
Why visit Zhaotong?
Zhaotong (昭通; Zhāotōng) is a prefecture-level city in northeastern Yunnan Province, situated at 1,900 m elevation on the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. Zhaotong is less visited than Yunnan's more famous destinations but offers authentic rural landscapes, unique minority cultures, and the spectacular Dashanbao Nature Reserve (大山包自然保护区), a high-altitude wetland and grassland that is a critical habitat for the endangered black-necked crane. The city has a cooler, more continental climate than the rest of Yunnan — summers are mild and winters are cold. Autumn (September–November) is the best time to visit for crane viewing.
