Why visit Chuxiong?
Chuxiong (楚雄; Chǔxióng) is a prefecture-level city in central Yunnan Province, about 160 km northwest of Kunming. It is the capital of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, the heartland of the Yi ethnic minority (one of China's largest minority groups). Chuxiong is known for its vibrant Yi culture, the spectacular Yuanmou Earth Forest (元谋土林), and the Dinosaur Valley — one of the world's most important dinosaur fossil sites. The city itself is a pleasant, modern Yunnanese city with wide boulevards and a large Yi cultural presence. The climate is mild year-round. Spring (March–May) is the best time to visit, especially during the Torch Festival.
