About Baoshan

Baoshan (保山; Bǎoshān) is a prefecture-level city in western Yunnan Province, situated on the historic Southern Silk Road (the Ancient Tea Horse Road). Baoshan serves as the main transit hub for visitors heading to Tengchong (its volcanic hot springs), the Gaoligong Mountains (a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve), and the Nujiang (Salween) River Valley. The city itself is a pleasant, mid-sized Yunnanese city with a temperate climate year-round due to its 1,650 m elevation. Baoshan has a long history as a frontier garrison town and trading post, with significant Hui (Chinese Muslim) and Yi minority populations. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit.
