Yuanyang

Yunnan Sheng, China

Why visit Yuanyang?

Yuanyang (元阳; Yuányáng) is a county in southern Yunnan Province, about 300 km south of Kunming. The county has the Hani Rice Terraces (哈尼梯田), among the most spectacular agricultural landscapes in the world. Carved into the Ailao Mountain slopes over 1,300 years by the Hani people, these terraces cascade down the mountainsides in a breathtaking 4,000-step staircase. The terraces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are most stunning at sunrise and sunset, when the water-filled paddies reflect the sky in a thousand shimmering mirrors. The best time to visit is December–April, when the terraces are flooded and the skies are clearest. Yuanyang's main town (Xinjie) is small and focused entirely on the terraces.
