Shennongjia
Hubei Sheng, China
Why visit Shennongjia?
Shennongjia (神农架) is a forested mountain region in the western part of Hubei Province, designated as Shennongjia Forestry District — a unique administrative area directly under the province. Named after the mythical emperor Shennong (the Divine Farmer), this UNESCO World Heritage site encompasses some of China's most pristine wilderness, with dense forests, deep valleys, and the mysterious "Wild Man" (Yeren) legends. The area is one of China's richest biodiversity hotspots, home to golden snub-nosed monkeys, clouded leopards, and hundreds of bird species.
Shennongjia has a subtropical highland climate with cool summers and cold, snowy winters. Temperatures at higher elevations (over 2,000 m) can drop below freezing from November to March. The best times to visit are May–October when the weather is mild and the forests are lush. Autumn (September–October) offers spectacular fall foliage. The main tourist hubs are Muyu Town (木鱼镇) and Hongping (红坪), which serve as gateways to the various scenic areas.

Ask on WhatsAppHow do you get there?
By Plane
The closest airport is Shennongjia Hongping Airport (HPG, IATA), a small high-altitude airport with limited domestic flights from Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Chongqing. The airport is about 30 km from Muyu Town (40 minutes by taxi, ¥100–150). Flights are often cancelled due to weather, especially in winter.
By Train
The nearest major railway station is Yichang East Railway Station (宜昌东站), about 180 km southeast. From there, take a long-distance bus to Muyu Town (about 4 hours, ¥80). Alternatively, the newly built Zhengwan high-speed railway stops at Shennongjia Railway Station (神农架站) near Xinhua Town — about 60 km from Muyu (1.5 hours by taxi).
By Car / Road
Driving from Yichang takes about 4–5 hours via the G42 Hurong Expressway and provincial roads. The mountain roads are winding and require careful driving, especially in rain or fog. Direct buses run from Yichang, Wuhan (8 hours), and Shiyan to Muyu Town.
The best way to get around Shennongjia is by hired car or taxi, as public transport is limited to infrequent buses between towns. Most scenic areas require a vehicle to reach. Tour buses and private drivers can be arranged through hotels in Muyu Town. The Shennongjia Scenic Area operates a shuttle bus system between its six main zones during peak season (¥120 for a day pass).
