Qitaihe

Heilongjiang Sheng, China

Why visit Qitaihe?

Qitaihe (七台河) is a prefecture-level city in eastern Heilongjiang Province, situated in the hilly region between the Wanda Mountains and the Songhua River plain. Like many cities in this part of Heilongjiang, Qitaihe developed as a coal-mining centre and remains an important energy-producing city. However, Qitaihe has a unique claim to fame as China's primary training base for winter sports athletes — particularly in short-track speed skating, where it has produced numerous Olympic champions.

Qitaihe has a subarctic continental climate with extreme winters (average January temperature −17°C, often dropping below −30°C) and warm summers (average July 22°C). Winter sports enthusiasts visit December–February; general tourists prefer June–September. The city's name in Chinese means "Seven Terraced Rivers," referring to the waterways that flow through its hilly terrain.
